Hebrews

The book of Hebrews was written a few years before the destruction of Jerusalem, which took place in A.D. 70.

Hebrews is written especially to Jewish Christians, some of whom were in danger of giving up their trust in Jesus. It appears that some attached too much religious importance to the great temple, its priesthood, and sacrificial rites. When these should come to an abrupt end, they might feel spiritually adrift, even devastated.

The book of Hebrews points its readers to Jesus as the fulfillment of the symbolic sacrifices. It presents Jesus as the great High Priest working sympathetically on the believer’s behalf in heaven’s temple or sanctuary.

The book of Hebrews reminds us to fix our eyes in faith upon Jesus, who will bring us safely to that heavenly city whose builder and maker is God.
